Week In Review

by Joseph Ward

Good Monday morning. Welcome to Believe Out Loud’s Week In Review, a weekly digest of the latest headlines at the intersection of Christian faith and LGBT equality.

Last Thursday, the Atlanta pastor scheduled to deliver the benediction at President Barack Obama’s second-term inauguration withdrew from the ceremony, because this past anti-gay sermon surfaced.

In response to this news about Rev. Louie Giglio, some are asking if conservative evangelicals are welcomed in the public square.

Last Wednesday, the Washington National Cathedral, the nation’s traditional host for presidential prayer and memorial services, announced it will hold same-sex marriages.

Rhode Island’s new Episcopal bishop plans to change local policy to allow priests to bless same-sex unions.

A transgender Catholic is scheduled to be ordained into the priesthood this weekend.

As Illinois begins discussing the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, support from the Christian community is pouring in.

Jeanne Manford, the founder of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), died last Tuesday at the age of 92. Rachel Maddow eulogized her on her MSNBC show.

Here’s a final thought from Monica Hamblet: “I was waiting for Rev. Louie Giglio to say that he no longer felt that way or advocates for such treatment of LGBT people, but he didn’t. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because maybe he had changed his stance and sermons, but he didn’t indicate that at all.”–January 10 @ Believe Out Loud Facebook
