500+ LGBTQI Christian Leaders Stand In Solidarity With Our United Methodist Colleagues

by Alison Amyx

To our LGBTQI colleagues in ministry in the United Methodist Church,

As you gather for General Conference and engage in difficult conversations around inclusion, we are sending you so much love and light. We sign this letter as openly LGBTQI clergy, future pastors, and faith leaders in our own denominations who stand with you in solidarity. Though we come from different traditions, you are our family in Christ and our siblings in the common struggle to live fully and authentically into our God-given identities and callings.

On Monday, we read the words many of you offered together to your beloved church. Our hearts swelled with pride at your prophetic and vulnerable truth-telling, even as they also clenched in empathy at the fear and risk many of you must have felt. With your words still reverberating inside of us, emboldening our own faith, we want you to know that you are not alone. Those of you who came out in Monday’s letter, and those who have come before you, and those who are still not able to live out your sexual and gender identities openly: we see you and we support you and we are surrounding you with love.

Even as we continue to work for LGBTQI justice in our own churches, we pray also for inclusion and justice in yours. We share your frustration for the ways in which the church continues to deny your gifts and calls. And we join you in crying out against the injustice of such discrimination.

In the days ahead, as the United Methodist Church prayerfully considers how to be obedient to God’s will, we pray that they will recognize their call to celebrate and uplift all of the LGBTQI Methodists who seek to serve God’s church in ministry. We pray also for you: that you would find comfort and strength and ongoing assurance that you are beloved.

Alongside all of you, we hope and work for a church and world that fully reflect the spirit of God by embracing all of God’s children. We give thanks for all that you are, for your faithful witness, and for your ministries. And we echo your message: it’s time.

In Christ,

Pastor Jarell Wilson

Thank you
Dear Siblings and Ministers in Christ,

Your love and prayers are most needed. When I signed the letter with 110 other LGBTIQ I was afraid, I was risking my job and my future; I didn’t know how many others were going to sign but I knew that I needed to be one person to do it. I signed because I wanted my ministry to be steeped in integrity and honesty, no matter the cost. I feel safe saying that I and all of the other 111 UMC are so grateful for your stand in solidarity with us.

As fellow LGBTIQ clergy, I know I watched and prayed with the Episcopal Church last year, and the General Assembly of the PCUSA two years ago, and I will continue to hold you all in prayer as we all work to move our denominations toward better reflecting the beauty and diversity of the KinDom of God – we Wesleyans would call it “Christian Perfection”. I will pray for y’all and I covet your prayers, and should my denomination move to cast me out because it finds itself unable to live up to the calling of Christ Jesus, I pray you will make space for me in yours.

In baptism we all swore to “resist evil and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves”, and we LGBTIQ clergy have taken that call seriously and I am so thankful that even from a distance y’all are reminding that me that we are one body. We are many different expressions of one body, but we are still one, and your love and support is helping my part of the body be made stronger.

Grace and Peace to you all,
Pastor Jarell Wilson

Immense Gratitude
Friends in the Spirit: Thank you for embracing us with uplifting support and caring. As I name each of you in prayer of thanksgiving, I am aware of our broad connection across this fragile planet, from the discerning to the Rev Drs, the affiliated to a denomination to the non-affiliated. Bless you. Thank you.

UMC’s Black Hole
Leaving the UMC behind 24 years ago over this very issue, when the UMC as a whole was closer to embracing the rights of all humans than it is very day, has been a blessing that has never stopped giving. Considering that not one iota of love and life-energy of mine has been wasted trying to swim up the UMC’s stream of vitriol and transactional love is to have witnessed a miracle.

While standing with all the others listed here in the pursuit of love, it saddens me to see the billions of watts of loving energy dashed on the rocks of the UMC’s supposed scepter of power from churches across the land having to suck on the tit of the UMC’s endowments. Instead of a gift, that money has become a curse that splashes all that come close with the cruelty of mind and money over heart. My congregation is thriving from having walked away.

Love is . . . the only engine of survival

standing in support of UMC
Dear Friends: I add my name in support of your clerical standing as glbtq leaders in the UMC. The denominations who already ordain us are grateful for the ministry we do. Our gifts are complementary to those of the straight women and men who are ministering in the Presbyterian Church USA, United Church of Christ, Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. We hope that the delegates to this UMC meeting will know that our denominations each struggled through the scripture passages and tradition and found that they could be interpreted faithfully and yet more grace-fully than in previous times. God is doing a new thing. We hold you all in our prayers.

Rev. Skip Jordan, BCCC

Allen Dearing

Why stay?
With so much support from so many different denominations why do LGBTQ people stay in the Methodist Church? Why not move to a denomination where their views are the same as others and then they go an reach people for Jesus and those who views are different stay where their views are the doctrine and reach people their way. Stop spending so much energy on changing something that really only effects 3% of the population and lets all work together in our own ways to reach 100% of those who need Jesus? This is an honest question I have never gotten an answer to.

Hi Allen, I’m a bisexual
Hi Allen, I’m a bisexual PCUSA pastor whose denomination only became inclusive of LGBTQ ordination in the last 6 years. It’s worth pointing out that every denomination represented in this letter once denied LGBTQ folks their call just as the UMC is doing now. If we had all followed your logic then none of our denominations would ever have become inclusive and you wouldn’t be recommending them as alternatives to this faithful Methodists now. I imagine LGBTQ Methodists stay for the same reason I stayed in my denomination: a deep sense of being called by God to the work of helping their own tradition to be more just and inclusive and therefore better reflect God’s own heart. Whatever the actual percentage of LGBTQ folks there are in the world or in the church, questions of inclusion and justice for those historically marginalized is of important of all people seeking to live in faithful obedience to God. I think that is a crucial part of doing the work of spreading the love of Christ far and wide. Hope this helps answer your question.

I too proudly and happily add my name to this list. As the son of a LGBT father who finally started living authentically within the last five years as well as the father of a transgender teen, this issue has become not just a ministerial or moral one, but a very personal one as well. I am humbled by the love and grace of God as we have journeyed as a family and in my faith tradition, to become what we hope and trust is the loving Zionic community God calls us to be as in Isiah. May Jesus’ spirit of love and fellowship be with you and may the Holy Spirit bless you as you walk this path together. You are not alone.
