JJ Marie Gufreda is the author of Left-Hander in London: A Field Guide to Transgenders, Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals - In the Family, On the Job and In the Pew and is a playwright and performer. Her new production is titled, Left-Hander in London – The Earthquake. JJ is the President of the Indy Rainbow Chamber of Commerce and is a frequent speaker on Diversity, Religion and Political issues. JJ is married and has three children and four grandchildren.

During the holidays, I noticed a Franciscan Health commercial with the hashtag #FranciscanPeacePrayer. This beautiful prayer, attributed to St. Francis in the 13th century, was repeated during the commercial.

The visuals in the ad showed smiling people helping each other and showing love.

I was a Catholic for over fifty years. I was president of the Altar Boys (how many women can say that?). I was involved with religious groups at my high school. I was a Eucharistic Minister. I played piano at Mass for over 25 years. I worked retreats for high school seniors and ran retreats in parishes. 

When I started my gender transition several years ago, to say it did not go well with my Catholic friends and the Church would be an understatement. I can summarize with a few observations.

I am a former “sufferer.” Sufferer is a term that David Johnson uses to describe people that experience panic and anxiety. David is a former sufferer and has a clinic in New Zealand to help people that suffer from anxiety and panic attacks.
