Meet the Bloggers

Katie Becker is a sophomore at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Originally from Seattle, WA, Katie is a confirmed member of the United Church of Christ. At Duke, she is a member of Presbyterian Campus Ministries, is a Chapel Scholar, and is on the Undergraduate Interfaith Council. She is a biweekly columnist for Duke’s independent daily paper, The Chronicle. Katie is studying psychology, and she is particularly interested in the social psychology of bias, prejudice, and violence. Katie identifies as a third wave feminist and an ally with the LGBTQ+ community, identities that she feels are deeply rooted in her Christianity.

On August 22, during a Divinity School orientation panel on diversity, Dean of the Divinity School Richard Hays asserted that “the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching” in response to a question about resources for LGBT students. Hays reminded students that the United Methodist Church, the Divinity School’s affiliated denomination, does not ordain homosexual clergy or recognize same-sex unions.
