DC Events Launch LGBT Faith & Asylum Network

by James Rowe

The LGBT Faith and Asylum Network (LGBT-FAN) invites you to help launch our LGBT Faith and Asylum Network. We are helping people who are seeking safety in the U.S. because of persecution of their sexual orientation or gender identity in their home countries. The Network is made up of faith leaders, asylum-seekers, people who have already gained asylum, LGBT rights activists, LGBT community center staff, policy experts, and refugee resettlement workers who feel called to this work.

Briefing on Capitol Hill
Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at 1 p.m.
PLACE: Rayburn House Office Building 2103

With persecution of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people escalating in Russia, Uganda and other countries, the newly established LGBT Faith and Asylum Network (LGBT-FAN) is working with the LGBT Congressional Caucus to provide a briefing on the needs of asylum seekers. The briefing is Thursday, January 9, 2014, at 12 p.m. and features experts in the field.

Reception and Program Sharing Time
Thursday, January 9, 2014, at 7 p.m.
The DC Center for the LGBT Community
2000 14th Street NW, Suite 105
Washington, DC 20009

Join us for a reception and an introduction to LGBT asylum leaders and asylum seekers based in San Francisco, CA; Worcester, MA; Washington, DC; and Toronto, Canada about their on-the-ground work supporting LGBT people going through the asylum process. There will be time for questions and informal discussion will follow during the reception.

The aim of both events is to inform the public of the realities faced by an extremely at risk population, as well as inspire action towards improving that reality.
