Become a Welcoming Church

The Christian movement for LGBT inclusion is more than 30 years old. There is a wealth of resources – both denominational and non-denominational – that can help guide your church in the process to becoming welcoming.

Biblical/Theological Questions

The Bible is our richest tool for promoting LGBT inclusion in the Christian church. The following resources provide insight into how the Bible promotes these values.

Communities of Color

For communities historically burdened with racial discrimination, the added issue of LGBT inclusion can be particularly difficult to address.

Especially for Clergy

Church leaders, particularly ordained clergy, hold the dual role of being both prophetic and pastoral – they must help the congregation be better, while also supporting it as it is.

Starting a conversation

Stories can be powerful entry points into the conversation about LGBT inclusion. Stories deepen understanding, and teach to treat others with compassion and respect.

Youth

Following are resources for teens and their parents, teachers, and mentors. Many of the articles and books referenced may be adapted for discussion in youth group formats.

Multimedia Gallery

The progress we have made toward LGBT inclusion – both secularly and religiously – has produced an array of documentaries that tell the stories of LGBT individuals, their families and communities.  Below is a selection of films that speak especially to the intersection between LGBT identity and faith.  The stories they relate can be a powerful catalyst for group discussion and individual discernment.
