The North American Old Catholic Church, one of the largest Old Catholic bodies in the United States, will ordain Shannon T.L. Kearns to the priesthood on January 19, 2013. Kearns, who is a transgender man, will be tasked with starting a new Minneapolis parish, House of the Transfiguration, after his ordination.

I spoke with a friend this week who isn’t coming home for Christmas. Her relationship with her mother has slowly deteriorated since she came out, and her conservative mom can’t bear to accept her daughter’s female partner. The siblings have chosen sides, and for the second year in a row, they won’t be home for Christmas.

Last night, I attended the ninth anniversary celebration of the National Center for Transgender Equality. The organization gathers each year to celebrate the past year's progress and honor those who are working to secure full equality for transgender people.

The event was my first opportunity to meet fellow LGBTQ activists in Washington, D.C., and I was excited to hear about the creative ways that individuals and organizations are working toward transgender rights.

Methodist delegates from around the world are gathering in Tampa, FL, for the General Conference of the United Methodist Church. This meeting happens every four years, and it's the only opportunity to revise the Book of Discipline, which governs the denomination on every level.

This weekend's [Baptist] Conference on Sexuality and Covenant in Decatur, GA, was a breath of fresh air in hostile debates about religion and homosexuality. It was hosted by the moderate Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) and the Center for Theology and Public Life at Mercer University.
